A Three-Day Adventure in the Heart of the Rockies

Last Friday, my partner and I embarked on a thrilling three-day adventure to the picturesque towns of Ouray and Telluride, Colorado. Our primary motivation? To conquer the famous via Ferrata routes in both towns, test our limits, and immerse ourselves in the breathtaking beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Day 1: The Journey Begins

We set off from Denver, embarking on a six-hour road trip to Ouray. Our arrival was a bit late, and as a result, we ended up camping off the road along Highway 550. Exhausted from the journey, we decided to sleep in our car, foregoing the camp setup. It may not have been the most luxurious start, but we were eager to get a good night's rest for the adventure that awaited us.

Day 2-4: Embracing Nature in Ouray

For all three nights, we chose to camp amidst the natural beauty of the area. Camping not only allowed us to be closer to nature but also provided the coziest and most budget-friendly accommodation. Our tent became our haven, and we perfected the art of a good night's sleep in it. The remote camping spot we found was still conveniently close to town, giving us the best of both worlds.

Via Ferrata in Ouray: A Challenging Delight

Our primary motivation for coming to Ouray was to tackle the via ferrata. The route was conveniently accessible to the public and offered two options: downstream and upstream. We opted for the downstream route, which treated us to stunning views and plenty of spots for snack breaks (an essential component of any adventure). The real highlight came towards the end, where the challenge peaked. The feeling of strength and determination when conquering the final stretch was immensely rewarding.

Exploring Ouray: Hidden Gems and Coffee Delights

Beyond the via ferrata, Ouray had more to offer. One standout spot was Mojo's, a coffee shop with an incredible vibe. While we only managed to visit once (due to their noon closing time), their pumpkin spice latte left a lasting impression. We also savored tasty dishes at Maggie's Kitchen, and the quaint charm of the town made it all the more delightful.

Transition to Telluride: A Scenic Drive

On Monday, we made the short but breathtaking journey to Telluride. The drive took just an hour and was a visual treat in itself. We could feel the change in scenery as we left Ouray and entered the captivating landscape of Telluride. The town was bustling with activity, hosting a film festival that added to its vibrant atmosphere.

Via Ferrata in Telluride: A Thrilling Challenge

The via ferrata in Telluride offered a different level of difficulty and a dose of adrenaline. Unlike Ouray, it featured exposed sections without safety equipment, with a staggering 600-foot drop below. The trail wasn't as well marked, requiring us to hike uphill for about 1.5 miles to reach the trailhead. Adequate preparation and practice with via ferrata equipment were crucial, as was keeping an eye on the weather, especially given the gusty winds on exposed portions.

Telluride Exploration and Farewell:

While we didn't explore Telluride as extensively as Ouray, the town's scenic beauty and the adrenaline rush from the via ferrata made it a memorable experience. We grabbed a pizza from a local shop for a quick meal, although the service left much to be desired.

Reflection and Travel Tips:

Looking back on our trip, I'm immensely proud of conquering the via ferrata in both Ouray and Telluride. It was a challenging adventure that pushed our limits and strengthened our bond. Moreover, I learned to cherish the present moment and not let the worries of life at home steal the joy of being in the moment.

As for travel tips, my advice would be to plan your trip but also follow your instincts. Whether you're climbing local peaks or simply enjoying the view from your campsite, Colorado offers a diverse range of experiences. Consider disperse camping to save money and make the most of your budget.

Conclusion: A Journey Worth Remembering

Our three-day journey through the stunning landscapes of Ouray and Telluride was a rollercoaster of adventure, nature, and self-discovery. From conquering via ferrata routes to savoring pumpkin spice lattes, every moment was a treasure. It's a trip that will remain etched in our memories, reminding us of the beauty of the present and the thrill of embracing the unknown.
